Steve Howey’s Acting Journey: From Shameless to Brilliant Minds and Beyond
"From his hilarious antics in 'Shameless' to his heartfelt moments in 'Reba', Steve Howey has proven time and again that he's a force to be reckoned with. Fast forward to 2025, and he's stealing the show in 'Brilliant Minds' and reuniting with old friends in 'Happy's Place'. Whether he's making us laugh or cry, one thing's for sure—Steve Howey knows how to keep us hooked!"
In 2024, he landed a spot in NBC's "Brilliant Minds," rocking the character Wyatt James. He's got this neat trick of flipping from making us laugh to pulling our heartstrings, and it's just solid proof he's got mad skills in acting.
Howey just popped up in a festive episode of NBC's "Happy's Place," adding another performance to his cool set of gigs. His cameo was pretty sweet because he got to hang with his old "Reba" pals, like Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman. Fans of the old show were super pumped to see them together again, and now there's chatter about Howey maybe dropping by more often. He's down to get back to the laughs of sitcom TV.
The movie scene's still keeping Howey busy, too. He teamed up with Jamie Foxx in the Netflix action laugh-riot "Day Shift" in 2022, proving he has what it takes to shine in the big leagues. Whether on the small screen or in the cinemas, Howey's knack for nailing all sorts of roles proves he's a pretty versatile dude in the acting world.
Howey shines not just in his work but also as a super dad. With three kids to raise, he's good at juggling his busy schedule with fun times hanging out with his little ones. Are you ready to hear what he shared with us? Read below.
"Take us behind the scenes of your Shameless journey. How did you become Kevin Ball? Was it a nail-biting audition or a surprise offer? And spill the tea - who got that excited first call when you landed the role?"
"So, I got this audition through John Levy, a big-shot acting director in L.A. It was for a John Wells project, a huge Hollywood deal. It was a major for me. I had to go through a few rounds. First, I auditioned at John Levy's office on the Warner Brothers lot. Then I went back to read for the producers. I cracked a few jokes there, you know, to lighten the mood. The final audition was at Showtime, where I met Shanola. It was cool because we'd worked together before on Reba in the early 2000s. Oh, and here's a funny thing I do at auditions sometimes: I'll say, 'I got the job; you guys can go home now.' (laughs) It's just my way of breaking the ice, you know?"
"The Shameless cast seems incredibly close-knit. Can you share a memorable bonding experience with your castmates, perhaps from when you first started filming together?"
"Our first trip to Chicago to shoot exteriors was unforgettable. While we usually film interiors at Warner Brothers in Burbank, this Chicago excursion brought us together in a new way. The cast went out for dinner, hit up a couple of bars, and even ended up at an after-hours club. What's unique about our cast chemistry is the diversity. Except for Jeremy Allen White and Cameron Monaghan, who are similar in age and gender, we're all so different. Yet, we clicked like a real family. There was no competition, which is rare on set. Everyone just naturally fit into their family role and bonded. We partied it up," Steve laughs, then adds thoughtfully, "It's hard to describe the dynamics, but there's this undeniable synergy among us. That night in Chicago, I think, really cemented our bond."
What wisdom would you share if you had the world's attention?
My message is that other people have different opinions. Shaped by their unique upbringings, they have different understandings of life. The key is to empathize and understand that many different perspectives exist. Your reality is just one of them.
"What's the most transformative lesson you've learned that's shaped your personal growth?"
"I'm all about getting your body moving. It doesn't matter how you do it - running, hitting the gym, yoga, walking, lifting weights, martial arts, skydiving, hiking, or whatever gets you going. Our bodies are built to move; it's part of why we're here as humans. Movement is life.
Moving your body is good for your physical health, mind, and spirit. There are so many benefits to being active compared to being inactive. People who sit around too much and don't exercise often eat poorly, feel down, or have problems with their gut or mind.
Recently, I've also started meditating. It's the opposite of exercise—being entirely still. Balancing these two things—movement and stillness—has helped me. It's like yin and yang, you know?
I'm sure you'll get many offers left and right (laughs).
From your mouth to God's ears, I've been fortunate this far, and I hope that luck continues. I'm an open entity.
Steve Howey: A Force of Nature
"Steve Howey's authenticity is magnetic. Interviewing and working alongside him has been a career highlight. His brilliance, talent, and charm are undeniable, but his commanding presence truly sets him apart.
It's no surprise we've featured him on two covers - he's that captivating. We eagerly anticipate his next big move as Steve continues to make waves in the industry. One thing's sure: His star will only continue to rise."
